Waves

A Physics chapter of the NEET syllabus, and how to practise it for the computer-based exam.

Weightage: what the paper actually did

Waves carried 2 questions in the NEET 2026 paper. One paper is a data point, not a destiny: NTA moves weight between chapters every cycle, which is why the weightage tables deserve care. The stable facts are the paper's shape: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 right, −1 wrong.

Question 1 · NEET 2020

In a guitar, two strings A and B made of the same material are slightly out of tune and produce beats of frequency 6 Hz. When tension in B is slightly decreased, the beat frequency increases to 7 Hz. If the frequency of A is 530 Hz, the original frequency of B will be
  1. A.524 Hz
  2. B.536 Hz
  3. C.537 Hz
  4. D.523 Hz
Answer and explanation

Answer: A

Initially |fB - 530| = 6. Decreasing B's tension lowers fB; because the beat frequency then increases, B was already below 530 Hz. Thus fB = 530 - 6 = 524 Hz. Chapter: Waves.

Question 2 · NEET 2026

For sound waves, if the number of nodes for the 5th harmonic of an open-ended pipe is nn and that for the 9th harmonic of the same pipe with one of its ends closed is mm, the ratio nm\frac{n}{m} is
  1. A.59\frac{5}{9}
  2. B.95\frac{9}{5}
  3. C.1
  4. D.35\frac{3}{5}
Answer and explanation

Answer: C

An open-open pipe has antinodes at both ends, and its pp-th harmonic contains exactly pp nodes, so the 5th harmonic gives n=5n = 5. A closed pipe supports only odd harmonics, with a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end; its qq-th harmonic (qq odd) contains q+12\frac{q+1}{2} nodes, so the 9th harmonic gives m=102=5m = \frac{10}{2} = 5. The ratio is therefore 1. NCERT Class 11, Waves (standing waves in air columns).

How to practise Waves

Chapter by chapter, against real past-paper questions, on a screen: NEET is computer based from 2027. Read the chapter once, then attempt its PYQs until your accuracy stops climbing, and let the wrong answers tell you which lines to reread. If the chapter keeps refusing to stick, that has its own guide. There is also a free NEET mini mock with answers.

Is Waves important for NEET 2027?

It is part of the Physics syllabus the paper draws from, and NEET 2027 is computer based, so practise it on a screen. Your own accuracy in the chapter matters more than any weightage table: a heavy chapter you already score well on needs less time than a light one you keep missing.
