Oscillations

A Physics chapter of the NEET syllabus, and how to practise it for the computer-based exam.

Exam rules change between cycles. Confirm dates, syllabus and pattern against NTA's official site. We are not NTA.

Weightage: what the paper actually did

Oscillations carried 5 questions in the NEET 2026 paper. One paper is a data point, not a destiny: NTA moves weight between chapters every cycle, which is why the weightage tables deserve care. The stable facts are the paper's shape: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 right, −1 wrong.

Question 1 · NEET 2026

A cylindrical cork of uniform density floats in a liquid of density ρ1\rho_1. If the cork is depressed slightly and released, it oscillates harmonically with time period TT. If the same cork floats in another liquid of density ρ2\rho_2, then the similar oscillation has time period 2T2T. The value of ρ2/ρ1\rho_2/\rho_1 is:
  1. A.4
  2. B.2
  3. C.1/2
  4. D.1/4
Answer and explanation

Answer: D

Depressing the cork by xx creates an extra buoyant force AρgxA\rho g x directed back towards equilibrium, so the effective spring constant is k=Aρgk = A\rho g and T=2πmAρgT = 2\pi\sqrt{\frac{m}{A\rho g}}. With mm and AA unchanged, T∝ρ−1/2T \propto \rho^{-1/2}. Doubling the period therefore requires the density to fall by a factor of four: ρ2ρ1=14\frac{\rho_2}{\rho_1} = \frac{1}{4}. Question 2 · NEET 2026

Savitha, a XI standard student, while conducting an experiment to determine the effective length of a simple pendulum LL, notes down the data of time taken to complete 30 oscillations as 60 s and hence calculates the length of the simple pendulum as: (Take π2=9.8\pi^2 = 9.8, and g=9.8g = 9.8 m/s2^2)
  1. A.0.75 m
  2. B.1.5 m
  3. C.2 m
  4. D.1 m
Answer and explanation

Answer: D

The time period is T=60/30=2T = 60/30 = 2 s. From T=2πL/gT = 2\pi\sqrt{L/g}, the length is L=gT24π2=9.8×44×9.8=1L = \frac{gT^2}{4\pi^2} = \frac{9.8\times4}{4\times9.8} = 1 m. The other options result from arithmetic or period errors.

How to practise Oscillations

Chapter by chapter, against real past-paper questions, on a screen: NEET is computer based from 2027. Read the chapter once, then attempt its PYQs until your accuracy stops climbing, and let the wrong answers tell you which lines to reread. If the chapter keeps refusing to stick, that has its own guide. There is also a free NEET mini mock with answers.

Questions

How many questions did Oscillations have in NEET 2026?

Oscillations carried 5 questions in the NEET 2026 paper. Weightage shifts between cycles, so treat it as a probability, not a promise.

Where can I practise Oscillations PYQs for NEET?

Explore available chapter-wise NEET practice in BrainIt, free until the 2027 exam. Review explanations and track chapter accuracy to guide your revision. Sample questions from this chapter are on this page.

Is Oscillations important for NEET 2027?

It is part of the Physics syllabus the paper draws from, and NEET 2027 is computer based, so practise it on a screen. Your own accuracy in the chapter matters more than any weightage table: a heavy chapter you already score well on needs less time than a light one you keep missing.
