Weightage: what the paper actually did

Thermal Properties of Matter carried 1 question in the NEET 2026 paper. One paper is a data point, not a destiny: NTA moves weight between chapters every cycle, which is why the weightage tables deserve care. The stable facts are the paper's shape: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 right, −1 wrong.

Question 1 · NEET 2020

The quantities of heat required to raise the temperature of two solid copper spheres of radii r1_{1} and r2_{2} (r1_{1} = 1.5r2_{2}) through 1 K are in the ratio
  1. A.9/4
  2. B.3/2
  3. C.5/3
  4. D.27/8
Answer and explanation

Answer: D

The heat required to raise the temperature of a sphere is proportional to its volume, which is proportional to the cube of its radius. Given r1=1.5r2r_1 = 1.5 r_2, the ratio of volumes is (r1r2)3=(1.5r2r2)3=1.53=278\left(\frac{r_1}{r_2}\right)^3 = \left(\frac{1.5 r_2}{r_2}\right)^3 = 1.5^3 = \frac{27}{8}. Therefore, the ratio of the quantities of heat required is 278\frac{27}{8}. Chapter: Thermal Properties of Matter.

Question 2 · NEET 2026

The temperature of a metallic sphere of radius RR is increased by a small amount ΔT\Delta T. If the linear coefficient of thermal expansion of the metal is α\alpha, the approximate increase in the volume of the sphere is:
  1. A.2πR3αΔT2\pi R^3\alpha\Delta T
  2. B.3πR3αΔT3\pi R^3\alpha\Delta T
  3. C.4πR3αΔT4\pi R^3\alpha\Delta T
  4. D.6πR3αΔT6\pi R^3\alpha\Delta T
Answer and explanation

Answer: C

For small expansions the coefficient of volume expansion is γ=3α\gamma = 3\alpha. Hence ΔV=VγΔT=43πR3×3α×ΔT=4πR3αΔT\Delta V = V\gamma\Delta T = \frac{4}{3}\pi R^3 \times 3\alpha \times \Delta T = 4\pi R^3\alpha\Delta T. Equivalently, differentiating V=43πR3V = \frac{4}{3}\pi R^3 gives ΔV=4πR2ΔR\Delta V = 4\pi R^2 \Delta R with ΔR=RαΔT\Delta R = R\alpha\Delta T. NCERT Class 11, Thermal Properties of Matter.
