Amines

A Chemistry chapter of the NEET syllabus, and how to practise it for the computer-based exam.

Weightage: what the paper actually did

Amines carried 5 questions in the NEET 2026 paper. One paper is a data point, not a destiny: NTA moves weight between chapters every cycle, which is why the weightage tables deserve care. The stable facts are the paper's shape: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 right, −1 wrong.

Question 1 · NEET 2026

Select the reagents that reduce nitriles to primary amines. Choose the correct answer from the options given below. Statement I: (i) LiAlH4\mathrm{LiAlH}_{4}; (ii) H2O\mathrm{H}_{2}\mathrm{O} Statement II: Sn+HCl\mathrm{Sn} + \mathrm{HCl} Statement III: H2/Ni\mathrm{H}_{2}/\mathrm{Ni} Statement IV: Na(Hg)/C2H5OH\mathrm{Na}(\mathrm{Hg})/\mathrm{C}_{2}\mathrm{H}_{5}\mathrm{OH} Statement V: Br2\mathrm{Br}_{2}/aq. NaOH\mathrm{NaOH}
  1. A.II, IV and V only
  2. B.I, III and IV only
  3. C.I, IV and V only
  4. D.I, II and III only
Answer and explanation

Answer: B

Nitriles R−CN\mathrm{R}-\mathrm{CN} are reduced to primary amines R−CH2−NH2\mathrm{R}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{NH}_{2} by LiAlH4\mathrm{LiAlH}_{4} followed by hydrolysis, by catalytic hydrogenation H2/Ni\mathrm{H}_{2}/\mathrm{Ni}, and by Na(Hg)/C2H5OH\mathrm{Na}(\mathrm{Hg})/\mathrm{C}_{2}\mathrm{H}_{5}\mathrm{OH} (sodium amalgam in ethanol). So Statements I, III and IV are correct. Sn+HCl\mathrm{Sn} + \mathrm{HCl} (Stephen reduction) stops at the aldehyde, and Br2\mathrm{Br}_{2}/aq. NaOH is the Hoffmann bromamide reaction on amides, not a nitrile reduction.

Question 2 · NEET 2026

Given below are two statements. Statement I: Oxidation of p-nitrotoluene with acidic KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO}_{4} gives an acid that is stronger than benzoic acid. Statement II: Reduction of p-nitrotoluene with Sn/HCl\mathrm{Sn}/\mathrm{HCl} followed by neutralization gives an amine that is more basic than aniline. In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
  1. A.Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct
  2. B.Both Statement-I and Statement-II are incorrect
  3. C.Statement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect
  4. D.Statement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct
Answer and explanation

Answer: A

Each reagent attacks a different group on the same starting material. Acidic permanganate oxidises the methyl group to −COOH-\mathrm{COOH}, leaving the nitro group intact; the resulting p-nitrobenzoic acid is stronger than benzoic acid because the electron-withdrawing nitro group stabilises the carboxylate anion. Sn/HCl\mathrm{Sn}/\mathrm{HCl} instead reduces the nitro group to −NH2-\mathrm{NH}_{2}, leaving the methyl in place; the resulting p-toluidine is more basic than aniline because the electron-releasing methyl group raises the electron density on nitrogen. Both statements are therefore correct. NCERT Class 12, Amines; Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids.

How to practise Amines

Chapter by chapter, against real past-paper questions, on a screen: NEET is computer based from 2027. Read the chapter once, then attempt its PYQs until your accuracy stops climbing, and let the wrong answers tell you which lines to reread. If the chapter keeps refusing to stick, that has its own guide. There is also a free NEET mini mock with answers.

Questions

How many questions did Amines have in NEET 2026?

Amines carried 5 questions in the NEET 2026 paper. Weightage shifts between cycles, so treat it as a probability, not a promise.

Is Amines important for NEET 2027?

It is part of the Chemistry syllabus the paper draws from, and NEET 2027 is computer based, so practise it on a screen. Your own accuracy in the chapter matters more than any weightage table: a heavy chapter you already score well on needs less time than a light one you keep missing.
