Weightage: what the paper actually did

Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles and Techniques carried 6 questions in the NEET 2026 paper. One paper is a data point, not a destiny: NTA moves weight between chapters every cycle, which is why the weightage tables deserve care. The stable facts are the paper's shape: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 right, −1 wrong.

Question 1 · NEET 2026

During Lassaigne's test, the elements present in an organic compound are converted from:
  1. A.Ionic form to ionic form
  2. B.Covalent form to ionic form
  3. C.Covalent form to covalent form
  4. D.Ionic form to covalent form
Answer and explanation

Answer: B

In Lassaigne's (sodium fusion) test the organic compound is fused with sodium metal, which converts the covalently bonded N, S and halogens into water-soluble ionic sodium salts (NaCN, Na2_{2}S, NaX). These ions are then detected in aqueous extract, so covalent forms are transformed into ionic forms.

Question 2 · NEET 2026

Arrange the following compounds in the increasing order of polarity. Statement I: CH3CH2OCH2CH3\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{CH}_{2}\mathrm{OCH}_{2}\mathrm{CH}_{3} Statement II: CH3CH2OH\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{CH}_{2}\mathrm{OH} Statement III: CH3COCH3\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{COCH}_{3} Statement IV: CH3COOH\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{COOH} Choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  1. A.I < II < III < IV
  2. B.III < I < IV < II
  3. C.III < I < II < IV
  4. D.I < III < II < IV
Answer and explanation

Answer: D

Polarity here is judged by how strongly the functional group interacts through dipoles and hydrogen bonding, which is the ordering used in chromatography. Diethyl ether has no O-H and only weak dipolar interaction, so it is least polar. Acetone's carbonyl is strongly polar but it can only ACCEPT hydrogen bonds, never donate one, so it ranks below ethanol, which has an O-H donor. Acetic acid combines a carbonyl, an O-H donor and acidic ionisation, making it the most polar. Hence I < III < II < IV.
